Working with Breath Series: Invigorate, Relax, and Find Balance with Us this January and February!

Breath is foundational to yoga. Skillful inhalations and exhalations lend vitality and lightness to every pose, while incorrect breathing turns the easiest of movements into a drag.

And yet, in most yoga classes, breathing is addressed much too briefly. You probably heard yoga instructors tell you to “use your breath”—and you may have wondered what that meant, the way you wondered what Obi-Wan Kenobi meant when he told Luke to “use the Force!”

This four-class eries de-mystifies yogic breathing, so that you can use it to support your asana practice and daily life. It also walks you through a basic Vinyasa-style sequence, with focus on safe alignment and mutually enhancing relationship between alignment, movement, and breath. Having completed the series, you will be able to:

1. Shape your inhalations and exhalations more deliberately and precisely (through understanding how muscles move to create breath, and developing more refined muscle control);
2. Deploy three different styles of breathing to produce different effects—invigorating, calming, and balancing;
3. Choose the most effective breathing technique for specific yoga poses and daily activities (whether you are trying to hold Plank or fall asleep);
4. Grow your yoga practice with safe, supportive alignment that is coordinated with your breathing.
